Update 11/27

Hi Parents,

Tonight's homework is page 102 for most students.  Ms. Holman's students have a multiplication review worksheet, and Ms. Blake's have a separate activity.  Today was our first lesson in Chapter 4, where we will work through a variety of strategies for estimating and finding quotients.  It is crucial that students have good mastery of basic multiplication facts.  If your child hasn't yet memorized the facts, please continue to work on these at home.

In reading, our mentor text is The Wretched Stone.  With this text, we'll be practicing making inferences and using context clues to find the meaning of unknown words.  We'll also be learning about specific figurative language devices and, as always, working on basic editing skills.  In small group reading, we are continuing to practice close reading skills.

In writing, students have been researching a reptile of their choice.  This week, we'll begin to the process of turning that research into a 5 paragraph report.  Stay tuned to learn some great facts about reptiles :-)

Finally, Ms. Vermillion's class will begin the 2nd half of the Earth Science unit, addressing questions like "Does a Mountain Last Forever" and "How can we protect ourselves from a landslide?"  Mrs. Thompson's class will begin their study of Native Americans.  They'll be researching tribes from the different regions of the U.S. and examining ways tribes differ based on their environment.

Also...don't forget that this Friday IS a school day.  An older edition of this school year's calendar had  12/1 marked as a teacher training day, but that is incorrect.  Students will be out of school on 12/15 instead.

Have a great evening!
