Update 11/30

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is page 213.  Students are practicing interpreting what a remainder means in the context of different word problems. Also, Since Chapter 4 is quite long, and we won't be able to finish it before the holiday, we've decided to divide it into 2 parts.  The test for sections 4.1-4.5 will be on Thursday of next week.  Students will take a practice/review test, as usual, but you may want to encourage them to use Think Central to start reviewing the sections we've already completed. Also, don't forget to read all about our holiday activities on yesterday's post.  We do need a few parents to volunteer their time on Wednesday, 12/13, to help us with our Gingerbread House STEAM project, and we also need a few volunteers to make icing at home and send it in.  We're asking all students to choose at least one item from the supplies list to contribute.  Check yesterday's post for details! Have great evening!

Holiday Activities Information

Hi Parents, Below is the text of a letter that will be sent home today. Please let us know if you can help! Mindy.thompson@am.dodea.edu jennifer.vermillion@am.dodea.edu Dear Parents, During the week of December 11th, there are a few special activities that fourth grade would like to do. Gift Exchange : This is an activity that is meant to be silly and fun, so gifts don’t need to be special or valuable. Your child can just wrap a toy or item that they already own and that they don’t use or play with anymore.  Please don’t feel like you need to go out and buy a gift!  (If you really can’t think of anything and plan on buying something, please don’t spend more than $5.) We will do the gift exchange on Thursday, December 14th, which is the last day before the break. Please bring the wrapped gift anytime that week . Gingerbread House STEM Project :  We will also be doing a STEM project that involves building a gingerbread house. We begin the ...

Update 11/28

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is page 207.  Students are solving basic division problems with remainders.  In class today, students were encouraged to model the problem or draw pictures, so if your child has trouble, that may be a helpful strategy. Please remember that we DO have school on Friday!  School will be out on 12/15 for a teacher training day. Have a great evening!

Update 11/27

Hi Parents, Tonight's homework is page 102 for most students.  Ms. Holman's students have a multiplication review worksheet, and Ms. Blake's have a separate activity.  Today was our first lesson in Chapter 4, where we will work through a variety of strategies for estimating and finding quotients.  It is crucial that students have good mastery of basic multiplication facts.  If your child hasn't yet memorized the facts, please continue to work on these at home. In reading, our mentor text is The Wretched Stone .  With this text, we'll be practicing making inferences and using context clues to find the meaning of unknown words.  We'll also be learning about specific figurative language devices and, as always, working on basic editing skills.  In small group reading, we are continuing to practice close reading skills. In writing, students have been researching a reptile of their choice.  This week, we'll begin to the process of turning that res...

Update 11/20

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is the Chapter 3 Practice Test, found on page 189 in the text. Many students had time to work on this in class, but since some had other assignments to finish, students are only responsible for completing the EVEN numbered items.  We will go over all answers in class tomorrow, students will be given time to ask questions, and then we will have the Chapter 3 test.  Please help your child practice double digit multiplication and estimation! Have a great evening!

Update 11/16

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is page 175 on the math textbook.  Students are allowed to choose their favorite strategy to solve the multiplication problems.  Don't forget that tomorrow is our field trip to the Onslow County Environmental Education Center.  Unless your child has ordered a sack lunch from the cafeteria, please don't forget to pack a lunch for your child.  There will be no place to buy food.  Also, there is no gift shop, so no need to bring money. Please let us know if you have any questions.  Have a wonderful evening!
November 14, 2017 Hi Parents! For Mrs. Thompson's class, homework is page 167 in the textbook.  For Mrs. Vermillion's class she assigned page 167: Problems 2 - 7; and page 168: Problems 1 & 2. Students are using the area model to multiply 2-digit by 2-digit numbers.  This week in math, we'll be learning several strategies to use when solving these types of problems.  After we've learned the strategies, students will be encouraged to select the one that works for them. Also, school pictures went home today with your child.  If you wish to order, please send back your order form with money or the receipt showing you paid online.  If you do not wish to order please send the whole package back with your child.   Have a great evening!

Update 11/17

Hi Parents ! Tonight's homework is page 149.  We're beginning Chapter 3 and will be working on this chapter until Thanksgiving.  Some students also received a packet to help them make corrections on the Chapter 2 test.  These need not be completed tonight; feel free to keep them over the long weekend and just turn them in when complete. Also, permission slips to participate in the Eagle Eye News were sent home with all students today.  Please sign these ASAP and return them to school.  All students who return the slips will have the opportunity to be a star reporter on our school's new morning news show :-) Have a great evening!

Update 11/6

Hi Parents! Today was super heavy on testing--SRI, interim math, Chapter 3 pre-test--so there is no homework tonight.  We all need to give our brains a break!  Please keep studying those multiplication facts, though, and make sure your child is reading for at least 20 minutes. Don't forget that this Thursday is Conference Day.  You should have received a letter last week with your assigned conference time.  If you don't know it, please feel free to email your child's teacher to double check.  We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday!
