Update 9/28

Image
Hi Parents! I hope you all enjoyed your brief break from school yesterday.  Today in math, students completed the Mid-chapter Checkpoint for Chapter 5.  We also worked on lesson 5.4, and students were assigned page 303 for homework.  It is very common for students to confuse factors and multiples.  Here's a video to help: Also, in Mrs. Vermillion's class, a few students were asked to take home their Scholastic close reading assignment.  Please ask your child if he/she needs to complete this for homework. Have a wonderful evening!

Update 9/26

Hi Parents! We don't have school tomorrow, but students do still have homework.  They will be completing page 595--596 in their textbooks.  Some students have selected problems--these should be marked in the text book.  I'm so sorry to say that Mrs. Thompson's class still does not have access to Think Central.  We've been told that our IT people are working on it, so hang in there! Have a great evening!

Update 9/25

Hi Parents! Happy Monday!  Tonight's homework is page 289 in the textbook.  Mrs. Vermillion's class is currently able to access Think Central for help, but Mrs. Thompson's class is having some "technical difficulties," so students do not have access to online materials.  Please encourage your child to look back into the section if they need help. This week in reading, our fiction text is My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother , by Patricia Polacco.  With this text, we're working on character analysis and using text evidence to support ideas.  Our non-fiction selection is "Running Wild," an article from Scholastic magazine.  Students are using this text to practice close reading strategies.  In writing, we continue to work on editing skills and on composing personal narratives.  Next week students will begin working through the 5-step writing process to publish one of the rough drafts they've created over the last few weeks. In Science and Social...

Update 9/21

Hi Parents! Today we took a pre-test for Chapter 5, which focuses on factors, multiples, and number patterns. Please do not be alarmed if you see low pre-test scores in Think Central.  The purpose of the pre-test is to let us know what your child already knows about a topic and to help us form differentiated math groups. Please encourage your child to see their pre-test score as a starting point for improvement. Tonight's homework is a multiplication puzzle intended to help students review the basic multiplication facts and practice their logical thinking skills.  This homework is not in the book, but should be a worksheet found in the take-home folder.  We will begin lesson 5.1 tomorrow. Please don't forget to come out to our PTO Family Night Book Fair tonight.  The event will be from 4-6.  "Saddle Up and Read" is the theme.  We hope to see you here! Have a great evening!

Update 9/19

Hi Parents! Tonight students get a break from math homework since our math block was taken up by the test. Please continue to encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes. If you'd like to know your student's math test grade, please ask him/her to log in to Think Central.  There, you can find the scores for any assessment that is taken online.  The Chapter 1 Test will be our first one.  All 4th graders should now have access to the website. Log in: (no pluses or spaces) first initial + first 3 of the last name + 4-digit student number @ student.dodea.edu Password: Fourth! You can find test scores by clicking the "My Scores" link. Please don't forget about our school Book Fair.  We look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday for Family Night.

Update 9/18

Hi Parents! Happy Monday!  Tonight's homework is the Chapter 1 Review/Test in the students' textbooks (pages 55-60).  We completed the even numbered items during class today, and students were given a chance to correct their work and ask questions.  Tonight, they should complete the odd numbered items, and we highly encourage parents (or older siblings, grandparents, etc.) to check over the work and help make sure students are ready for tomorrow's test. This week in Reading, we're continuing to practice summarizing, and we will also be working on making inferences with supporting evidence.  Our editing skill of the week is identifying and punctuating proper nouns. In math, we will begin Chapter 5 this week, which focuses factors, multiples, and identifying number patterns.  If you'd like your child to get some extra practice with these skills, I'll put a few links on the "Extra Practice" page on our blog. Finally, Ms. Vermillion's class wil...

Update 9/14

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is page 47, which focuses on subtraction with regrouping.  This should be building on last year's skills, but many of our students had a some difficulty with regrouping, so if you can, please take a few minutes to check over your child's work and, if necessary, give a bit more guidance.. Also, graded mid-chapter quizzes were sent home today.  These provide a great "dipstick" for gauging how well your child understood the first half of the chapter.  Students are highly encouraged to make corrections to this test and return them for half credit.  Remember, we have our Chapter 1 math test next Tuesday. Tomorrow, students will get a chance to preview our Scholastic Book Fair, hosted by the PTO.  Next week, students will be allowed to visit the book fair during the morning and during recess to make book purchases.  Be on the lookout for those wishlists tomorrow afternoon :-) Finally, our PTO fundraiser is being held tonight...

Update 9/13

Hi Parents,  I wanted to post today as a reminder that, since it's Wednesday, we don't have any homework due tomorrow.  Students should still read for at least 20 minutes, though! We will be having a Chapter 1 math test on Tuesday of next week.  There will be a practice test on Monday that will help your child pinpoint any areas of weakness and will be useful for helping your child study.  You may also want to encourage your child to bring his/her book home over the weekend (or, if available, use his/her ThinkCentral account) to review the concepts. Upcoming Events: 9/15 – Popcorn Friday (if you didn't buy a pass, it's $0.50/bag) 9/18 – T-Shirt Orders 9/18-9/22 – Book Fair 9/21 – Family Night Have a wonderful evening!

Daily Update 9/12

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is page 41.  Please encourage your child to check his/her Think Central account if he/she needs help. For the moment, this applies to Ms. Thompson's class only.  Ms. Vermillion's class should have log-ins within the next few days. You can always look back into lesson 1.6 for help, as well. We will also have a mid-chapter quiz tomorrow, so you may want to have your child look back over the first half of the chapter (1.1--1.4) as a review. Have a great evening!

Daily Update 9/11

Hi Parents! My apologies for the late post!  Tonight's homework is section 1.4, page 27.  I'm excited to tell you that students are no able to access their Think Central accounts, so please check in there for help. In Reading this week, our Mentor Text is Enemy Pie .  Students will practice summarizing and finding theme, supporting their ideas with text evidence.  In writing, we're working on paragraphs.  This week's topic is "someone special." In math, we'll finish up chapter one on Friday.  There will be a review day on Monday, then a test next Tuesday.  Please be sure and check your child's homework and let your child's teacher know if he/she is really struggling. In Science, Ms. Thompson's class will be moving on to Earth Science, while Ms. Vermillion's class is working on comparing and contrasting the regions of the U.S. It was great to see all our parents at the Freedom Walk this morning.  Thanks for all your support!

Daily Update 9/7

Good afternoon! Today's homework is page 15 in our textbook.  Students are working on writing the 3 different forms for the number.  We do encourage students to take their whole books home so that they are able to look back at the lesson materials in case they need help at home. Upcoming Events: 9/11 – Freedom Walk 9/15 – Popcorn Friday /18 – T-Shirt Orders 9/18-9/22 – Book Fair 9/21 – Family Night Have a great evening!

Daily Update 9/6

Hi Parents, Just a quick reminder that Wednesdays are typically no-homework days.  Because of our abbreviated schedule, we do not have time to introduce new materials, so we spend our math time on Wednesdays working on practice, enrichment, and remediation.  We'll definitely post here if that changes. Also, just a quick reminder:  It is very important to inform your child's teacher if your child's dismissal plan has been changed.  This can be accomplished through a note sent to school in the morning, an email sent to the teacher, or a call to the office, but please understand that teachers cannot allow students to leave school in a different way based solely upon the word of the child.  We care very much about your child's safely.  Please help us out by keeping us in the loop on any changes to your child's dismissal plan. Thank you so much for your support, and have a great evening!

Daily Update 9/5

Hi Parents, My apologies for the late posting!  Tonight's homework is page 9 in the textbook.  Some students are struggling a bit with recalling place value from 3rd grade, so please feel free to give some support.  Hopefully, our Think Central accounts will be available soon so that students will be able to watch lesson videos and get help at home. This week in 4th grade, we continue to assess, but we've also begun working in our reading curriculum, which focuses on a "Mentor Text" each week to teach writing and reading skills.  Our selection this week is First Day Jitters . In Math, we've kicked off our first chapter in the curriculum, which focuses on place value, addition, and subtraction within one million.  There are some practice game links on the "Extra Practice" tab on this blog. Finally, students in Mrs. Thompson's class will be working on science, with a focus on scientific inquiry, and students in Mrs. Vermillion's class will ...
