Update 10/31

Hi Parents! Happy Halloween!  In honor of trick or treating, there is no formal homework tonight.  The only exception to that is the few students who were unable to finish their Chapter 2 practice test in class today. Those students were asked to finish it tonight, and we will be going over it in the morning.  The test will be Thursday. Have a great evening!

Update 10/30

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is page 135.  This is the last section in Chapter 2, so tomorrow we'll begin preparing for our Chapter test. Students will complete a practice test in class, we'll go over it on Wednesday, and then we'll have the test on Thursday.  Please use your Think Central resources and your child's practice test to help him/her study. In reading this week, we're working on Main Idea/Detail, Compare/Contrast, and Theme.  Our whole group mentor text is Verdi  by Janell Cannon.  We're also using this text as a focus for our grammar; this week's focus skill is comparative and superlative adjectives. In Social Studies, Ms. Vermillion's class is still working on their Native American research projects.  Mrs. Thompson's class is investigating landslides and is working on designing ways people might protect their homes from this type of disaster Finally, if you haven't yet returned your child's permission slip for our ...

Update 10/26

Hi Parents!  Tonight's homework is page 129 in the textbook.  Students should be using the regrouping strategy to multiply 3 and 4 digit numbers.  We have one more lesson to complete in Chapter 2, which will be taught on Monday, before we begin preparing for our Chapter 2 test.  That test will be next Thursday.  Please encourage your child to use the online resources in Think Central to practice the concepts in Chapter 2 so that he/she is ready for the test. Today students were given a permission slip for a study trip that the 4th grade will be taking on November 17.  Both classes will be going to the Onslow Co. Environmental Education Center.  We need 10 chaperones--5/class--so please let us know if you can help out.  All volunteers must have completed the background check and DoD anti-terrorism training! Don't forget that tomorrow is a no-school day.  Enjoy your long weekend!

Update 9/24

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is page 123.  Students are using the traditional algorithm to multiply with regrouping.  I know most students have gotten very good at multiplying with partial products, but please try to encourage them to use today's method for practice.  Don't forget to use Think Central as a resource! Have a great evening!

Update 10/23

Hi Parents, Tonight's math homework is page 117.  In it, students are practicing solving multi-step multiplication problems by drawing diagrams.  There are only 2 problems in the homework, but each requires several steps.  Please encourage your child to draw diagrams and show his/her work. In whole-group reading this week, we're not starting a new mentor text.  Instead, we are taking a baseline reading comprehension test that we'll take again at the end of the year.  This will be a data point that will help us track your child's growth in reading comprehension skills this year.  In small-group reading, however, we will be working on identifying cause and effect relationships in a text. Finally, please don't forget to help your child study the multiplication facts of the week.  Each Monday, you should be getting a letter introducing this week's facts and showing your child's current level of mastery with these facts.  Please go over these fac...

Update 10/19

Hi Parents!  Tonight's homework is page l03.  We're still learning new ways to multiply multi-digit numbers; please encourage your child to use today's strategy on this assignment.  After students have worked with all the the strategies, they'll get to pick their favorite, but until then, we'd like them to at least get experience with all of the different multiplication strategies. In writing, we've gotten to the end of our personal narrative unit, and students have been publishing by typing on their Google drive.  Students who have not been able to finish typing in class were allowed to bring their rough drafts home to work on.  Please check with your child to find out if he/she needs to catch up on this at home.  Also please be on the look out for your child's Original Works packet, which will be sent home tomorrow.  Students spent some time in art class creating a piece of art, and our PTO is giving you the opportunity to order a copy of this wo...

Update 10/17

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is page 97 in the textbook.  Students will be breaking multi-digit factors into expanded form and using the distributive property to multiply and find the product.  This is just building on what we did  yesterday, so hopefully most students won't have too much trouble. Don't forget our fall festival on Friday, 10/20, hosted by our PTO.  Come on out, support our school, and have a blast with our school community! Have a great evening!

10/16 Update

Hi Parents and families! Welcome back to another great week.  Tonight's homework is page 91 in the textbook.  Students are working on using the distributive property to multiply.  This is the foundation of a lot of the other work we'll do in this chapter, so please help your child toward mastery. We are beginning a program this week to help students master their multiplication facts (if you have a 5th grader, it might look familiar!).  Each week for the next 7 weeks, students will be pretested on a group of multiplication facts, will be expected to study the facts at home all week, then will be post-tested the following Monday to look for growth.  Today, students took a pretest focusing on "doubles."  Please ask your child to see his/her pretest and read the letter on the back for more information.  You'll receive another set of facts next Monday! In ELA, we're wrapping up "personal narrative" writing and will be beginning to work on research a...

10/12 Update

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is page 67 in the textbook.  We're really proud of how hard the students worked today to master the concepts in this section, but a few still may need a little help.  Please look back into the textbook to see examples of how we solved problems in class or, of course, log into your Think Central account. Tonight is Dining to Donate at Wendy's.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to our fabulous PTO and passed on to your children in the form of activities, assemblies, classroom supplies, etc.  Please come out to support our PTO.  All students should have a brought home a flier with all the details. Finally, please mark fall picture day on your calendar.  It will be 24 October.  More details are forthcoming! Have a great evening!

Update 10/10

Hi Parents!  Tonight's homework is section 2.1.  Students are beginning to work on a various ways to represent multiplication problems.  Please have them watch the 2.1 lesson video on Think Central for help. This week in reading, our mentor text is The Man Who Walked Between Towers .  We're working on compound sentence, character analysis, and of course, editing skills.  In small groups, we will be working on finding evidence in the text and comparing two similar non-fiction texts. Mrs. Thompson's class will be finishing up their "Regions" Social Studies project, and Mrs. Vermillion's class will be wrapping up the current earth science unit. Have a great evening!

Update 10/5

Hi Parents!  Thanks so all of your who came out to curriculum night last night!  It was great to see our awesome students and to chat with all the moms, dads, and siblings! Since we had a test today, there is no written homework in the textbook.  We would like to encourage all students to log in to their Think Central account and review their Chapter 5 test results.  Students are not only able to see their score, but are also able to look back at the problems they missed to see where they went wrong.  This can be a great tool for learning! Tomorrow, we will have pre-test for Chapter 2, and we will begin Chapter 2 on Tuesday.  This chapter, as well as the ones that come after, rely heavily on your child's mastery of the basic multiplication facts.  If he/she does not yet have those facts memorized, please work on them at home! Finally, please don't forget the DoDEA flu shot requirement for students.  All info should have gone home in a OneCal...

Update 10/3

Hi Parents! Tonight's homework is the Chapter 5 Review Test, odd numbered items.  We completed the even numbered items in class today and went over them, so you students did have the chance to ask questions.  We'll go over the odd items right before the test, which is another opportunity ask for help.  Please work with your child at home (Think Central is a great resource!) and encourage students to ask questions when we review in class.  We will have the math test on Thursday, so there are 2 days to review! Also, don't forget Curriculum Night tomorrow night from 5:00 to 6:30.  The 4th grade teachers would love to see you come out and ask any questions you have about what we're working on in 4th grade. Have a great evening!

Update 10/2

Hi Parents, Happy Monday!  Tonight's homework is page 315.  At this point all 4th graders should have had their ThinkCentral accounts restored, so help is available by watching the lesson video that corresponds to lesson 5.6. Today was our last lesson in Chapter 5, so tomorrow we will complete a practice/review test (some of which will be homework) that should allow you and your child to pinpoint any areas where extra practice is needed.  Students will also be bringing home their graded mid-chapter checkpoints today or tomorrow, which will be another useful tool for preparing for the Chapter 5 test.  The Chapter 5 test will be on Thursday.  Next up...Chapter 2! This week in reading, we're reading Fireflies  and discussing figurative language.  In small group, we're using Scholastic News to help us learn about identifying and using text structure to aid in comprehension. In Social Studies, Mrs. Thompson's class is continuing to prepare their U.S...
